There are a number of different suppositories available. Suppositories are placed directly into the back passage and prompt the bowel to want to empty usually within 20-40 minutes. They can be used to help relieve occasional constipation and they may also form part of a regular bowel management plan to prevent faecal incontinence especially for those people with neurological conditions.
If you are asked to attend an examination, you may be offered a suppository to help totally void your bowels in advance of the appointment to ensure the clinician has a good view of the inside of your bowels. This is sometimes offered in conjunction with sachets to help soften stools and ease the process.
