Creams and ointments are a conservative treatment for haemorrhoids and can help soothe any inflammation or swelling around the anus, as well as helping with any itching or discomfort. There are several types that can be bought over the counter from pharmacies. However, these products will only treat the symptoms of haemorrhoids, and will not cure the haemorrhoids themselves.
Please ask your pharmacist for advice on which product may suit you best and always read the patient information leaflet before using any product.
Your GP can also prescribe Corticosteroid creams (these contain steroids) which can be used to reduce the swelling around your anus. These should not be used for longer than a week as they can make your skin around your anus thinner.
