Vaginal dryness, soreness, itching and painful sex can sometimes be symptoms of the menopause.
Without the production of oestrogen by the ovaries, the skin and support tissues of the vulva (“lips”) and vagina become thin and less elastic. This is an inevitable consequence of the menopause and the majority of women will experience some form of symptoms.
If vaginal dryness is the only problem, or hormone creams are not recommended because of other medical problems, lubricating gels may help. There are various gels which are specifically designed to help the problem of vaginal dryness by replacing moisture, and they can be used for as long as necessary.
Your GP can prescribe a vaginal lubricant or moisturiser, or you can ask your pharmacist for advice.
