If you experience nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) it’s always a good idea to go to the toilet before you go to sleep. However, for some people this will not cure the bed wetting problem alone and other methods are needed.

Night time alarm setting is an effective method in preventing bed wetting. Setting your alarm to wake you a few hours after you go to sleep, and a couple of hours before your usual waking time could be enough to illuminate bed wetting episodes. You may need more than one alarm clock depending on the pattern of your wetting habit. Try to vary the time every few days to avoid getting into the habit of emptying the bladder at the same time each night.

If you find that this approach is not for you, there are other methods available such as bedwetting alarms. These devices consist of a small sensor and an alarm. The sensor is attached to your underwear and the alarm is worn on the pyjamas. If the sensor starts to get wet, it sets off the alarm, waking you up.

Repetitive awakening by the alarm as soon as urination commences will gradually train the brain to exert automatic control over the bladder. Eventually, you will either wake up before urination or be able to sleep throughout the night without needing to empty the bladder.
