We know talking about incontinence is hard, there are millions of people who live, or care for someone with incontinence.  Worryingly many people over the age of 45 suffer in silence and avoid activities such as sports, travelling or even leaving the house due to incontinence. But you don’t have to suffer with incontinence.

Some people may resort to tricks in order to cope with the condition without seeking advice or talking to friends, family and partners.  One of the most common ‘tricks’ is to avoid drinking water, or fluids in general.  After all, too much fluid will worsen your incontinence, right?

Not at all!  If you limit your fluids, you will lower the overall capacity of your bladder and make the problem worse in the long run.  Limiting fluids can also trigger or worsen constipation or cause bladder irritation because your urine becomes more concentrated.

So what can you do to help manage your condition without it negatively impacting your life? We believe there are three important steps you can take towards a healthier mind and body when it comes to coping with incontinence.

1 – Talk to others

Talking to others can have a positive effect on both your relationship and self-confidence, in fact, 6 in 10 people in a study by HARTMANN said that they felt more supported as a result of talking to their partner. Not ready to talk to someone close to you, join the Bladder and Bowel Community closed Facebook group to listen in and chat with like minded people who are going through the same things you are.

2 – Seek out information

Help is out there, and there is no need to feel in any way embarrassed. Whether it is seeking help directly from your local Continence Clinic where you can often self-refer, or your local GP, make sure you get the right information for you. Remember, you’re not alone.

3 – Find a solution that works for you

Maybe the thought of wearing incontinence pads or pants is scary, maybe you already wear a pad but don’t feel it’s particularly discreet. Speak to the incontinence product advisors at HARTMANN Direct to find the best solution for you that fits with your lifestyle.
